Is there a difference between deep cycle and marine battery?

The terms “deep cycle” and “marine” are often used interchangeably or together. Marine batteries may be deep cycle batteries or also dual-purpose or starting batteries, but typically they’re a hybrid of starting and deep cycle batteries.

Can you use any battery for a boat?

You can use an automotive battery, but marine batteries are more reliable for boats. Car batteries (also known as cranking batteries) are designed to start the engine by giving a burst of energy. They can provide large amounts of energy quickly, but only for a short time. Marine batteries can start the engine and power other accessories on the boat, such as lighting, pumps, and more. On average, marine batteries can last about 3-4 years. If they are properly maintained, they can last up to 6 years.
