HOW TO CHOOSE A BADMINTON RACQUET

Having the right racquet will help you play the game comfortably and effectively so you can start scoring points and playing at your best. Canadian Tire has a selection of racquets and sets from great brands such as Head for players at any skill...

When purchasing a racquet, consider the following:

• Overall weight

• Head shape

• Grip size

• Flex

• Balance – whether it is more head heavy, head light, or has an even balance

The average weight of a racquet is around 80g to 100g. Heavier racquets will provide more power but may be difficult to maneuver, while racquets that are too light won’t have as much power. There are two types of head shapes – oval or isometric – where isometric heads are wider When it comes to balance, this is all up to preference. Head heavy racquets are powerful for offensive plays but may be taxing for defensive blocks. Head light ones are perfect for quick reactions and better control for defensive plays. Even balance options are more all-rounded and best for most types of players. You can also select between a flexible to extra stiff shaft depending on your level of expertise and preference. Finally, you’ll want to choose a grip size that is comfortable for you when holding the racquet. It is recommended to choose the smallest grip size for you as you can always add an overgrip if necessary but can’t reduce the size of a larger grip.

Which types of badminton racquets are best for beginners?

For beginner players, you’ll want to select a lightweight racquet as they are easier to control and allow you to practice and play for longer. As well, you want a racquet with even balance for balanced weight distribution and an isometric head for a wider surface to hit with. Once you get comfortable with your racquet and have some experience with the sport, you can find a racquet with weight, grip, flex, and other qualities tailored to your preferences.
