There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to motorcycle helmets and dirt bike helmets, such as style, colour and features. Before diving into any purchase, it’s good to know which models are best suited for your riding style.
What is the Difference Between Full-Face Helmets and Half Shell Helmets?
For all-around coverage, a full-face helmet is your best bet. Just as the name implies, this type of helmet completely covers the front, top and back of your head. Full-face helmets feature a chin bar and a visor in the eye port which can be opened and closed. They also come equipped with vents for air flow, so you don’t overheat when riding in the hot summer months.
Half shell helmets are another popular type of helmet. This style covers from the top of your forehead all the way to the back of your head. While there’s no face cover or chin bar, some models come with a retractable visor which is useful for riding on bright sunny days.
Are There Any Helmet Restrictions?
A helmet is required for anyone riding a motorcycle, whether it’s a cruiser or a sports bike. While helmet laws are provincially mandated, good quality modern helmets must meet DOT, Snell or ECE ratings in order to be permissible on the road. The best thing to do is check with your provincial riding laws to ensure the motorcycle helmet you want to purchase is acceptable.
