The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL). They are one of the Original Six teams of the league, founded in 1926. The team was known as the Detroit Cougars until 1930 when they changed their name to the Detroit Falcons up until the 1931-32 season. In 1932, they officially became the Detroit Red Wings. The Red Wings played their home games at Olympia Stadium until 1979, Joe Louis Arena from 1979 to 2017, and currently play at the Little Caesars Arena.
Why are they called the Red Wings?
The team’s name is a nod to the hockey club that James Norris played for in Montreal – the Winged Wheelers. He was the owner of the club from 1932 until his death in 1952.
How many times have the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup?
The Red Wings have won the most Stanley Cup championships of any NHL team in the United States, and third overall in total Stanley Cup championships after the Montreal Canadiens (24) and Toronto Maple Leafs (13).
