What is a tap and die set used for?

Tap sets and die sets are used for creating screw threads. Taps are used to create and form the female of a compatible male nut. The die, on the other hand, cuts or forms the male.

How to use tap and die?

First, make sure you’re using the right size drill to match up with the tap you’re looking to create. With the right bits picked out, you need to fasten your material down and, if it’s a harder material, prepare a little bit of cutting oil. Start drilling the hole for your tap at a slow speed and take your time. With the hole ready, insert your tap and use the ratchet turning handle to start creating the thread. Once you’ve created the thread slowly and carefully, turn the ratchet counter-clockwise to release it from the hole. A die is used in almost an identical way. You just need to ensure that the bits being used to create the initial hole and of the right size. Apply cutting oil as needed.
