What is the difference between a beach shelter and a canopy?

A beach shelter closely resembles a tent, and are designed to be waterproof, UV ray resistant, and easily erectable for convenience and portability. Beach shelters usually consist of at least one open side, to allow for lounging, privacy, and easy access. Alternatively, a beach canopy is usually much larger, often consisting of a heavy sheet of fabric suspended over multiple poles to create an artificial roof. As opposed to a tent, a beach canopy lacks side walls, providing shade and protection from overhead elements only, like sunshine or rain.

What should I look for in a beach umbrella?

When choosing the right beach umbrella, durability is paramount. A reliable umbrella is an essential piece of beach gear, and are most commonly made from polyester, canvas, or cotton materials. Polyester is a great choice as it’s durable, resistant to mold, dries quickly, and is easy to clean. Beach umbrellas made from canvas are also durable, and are usually PVC-coated, making them both reliably sturdy and fully waterproof. Cotton fabric beach umbrellas are excellent at naturally repelling heat, but they tend to be less durable than synthetic or reinforced fabric materials, and are not always fully waterproof. Generally, no matter which fabric you choose, the thicker and heavier the materials are, the more sun protection you’ll get.

What is a good beach umbrella size?

When choosing the right beach umbrella for your needs, the first thing to look at is the overall diameter. It’s important to consider how many people will be using it, and how you’ll transport it to and from the beach. For a beach day with family and friends, opt for a larger umbrella, with a total diameter starting at 9-ft or larger. For a solo trip, a smaller umbrella with a diameter around 6-ft is ideal.
