What are the different types of exterior paint?

There are three main types of exterior paint: porch and floor paint and wall paint for wood and concrete surfaces. There are also sprayable paints that are formulated for metal.

What is the most durable type of paint for outdoor use?

The most durable outdoor paint depends on the surface you are trying to protect. Enamel spray paints create a durable, high gloss finish that resists water to protect metal surfaces. Exterior floor paint is designed for use on wood and concrete surfaces, and resists foot traffic and abrasion. All exterior paint is designed to resist fading and aging from sunlight.

Are exterior paints waterproof?

Once they have dried and cured, exterior paints are all designed to be waterproof and weather-resistant, so it's best to paint exterior surfaces when the weather allows for plenty of drying time.

How do I know which exterior paint to buy?

Once you know what surfaces you need to paint, it's easy to decide on the paint type you'll need. Oil-based paints tend to perform slightly better outdoors, but water-based paints are easier to clean. In terms of durability, your biggest choice will be between an all-purpose exterior paint and a porch & floor paint. An all-in-one paint and primer can speed up a repainting project considerably. Finally, keep in mind that stains and sealers are good alternatives for wood decks if you prefer visible wood grain.
