What size brake line do I need?

The two most common brake lines that are used in cars and trucks are the ¼ inch brake line (also known as CNF-4) and the 3/16-inch brake line (also known as CNF-3). At Canadian Tire, we offer a selection of brake lines, including the standard ¼-inch and 3/16-inch sizes, for all your brake line repair needs.

Brake line can be purchased in various diameters and lengths, including pre-cut lengths with fittings already installed, or in bulk rolls for bigger jobs.

To determine what’s right for you you’ll need to know which diameter line your vehicle uses, how much length you need to replace, and whether your vehicle is using standard or metric fittings.

Are brake lines universal?

Yes, brake lines are universal. Just make sure that the brake lines have the right length and the proper-sized fitting for the attachment.

What fittings are used on brake lines?

There are different types of brake line fittings to work with specific brake lines, brake hoses, and brake component types. The most common fitting types are inverted flare fittings, AN fittings, and banjo fittings.

Are rusted brake lines dangerous?

Yes, a rusty brake line will affect your car’s braking capabilities to the point where it will be dangerous to drive on the road. The brake line can become so rusted that it can snap while driving.
