How to choose the right bike lock

What should I look for in a strong bike lock?

Bicycle locks made of steel, whether in a rigid U shape, braided cable, or chain, are deemed the strongest type of lock. Additionally, thick locks are harder to cut regardless of type.

While strength is a popular feature for bike locks, so are convenience and ease of use. Many locks across the different types use either a combination or key mechanism. It would be best to consider which of these mechanisms you prefer when deciding on a lock.

Which is a better bicycle lock: a U lock or a cable lock?

Once again, this comes down to preferences. For example, while many cyclists argue that a steel U lock is the most difficult for thieves to cut, they may be awkward to transport while riding. On the other hand, a thick cable cleverly wound around a bike’s components can be hard to dismantle yet easy to transport in your bag.
