Choosing the right type of transmission fluid for your vehicle

Part of your vehicle's regular maintenance must include checking the transmission fluid to see if the levels need topping up or refilling. While transmission fluids need not be replaced as frequently as your engine's motor oil, consider additives to enhance its performance and longevity.

How do I choose the right transmission fluid for my vehicle?

Depending on your vehicle's transmission, specific fluids are formulated for each type, such as CVT (continuously variable transmission) fluid, ATF (automatic transmission fluid), multi-vehicle transmission fluid, etc. The most common among them is the multi-vehicle transmission fluid. This fluid type is becoming popular as they're synthetic based and compatible with the automatic transmission systems in newer vehicles. In addition, for customers who own cars with CVT technology, synthetic fluids work better. Using suitable transmission additives with fluid during routine maintenance checks can help increase your vehicle's lifetime. What happens if the transmission fluid is low?

Gear slippage is one of the most common indicators of low transmission fluid, and the issue manifests when you have trouble shifting gears. You may also notice sudden jerks in movement during gear shifts which is another indicator of low fluid. Transmission fluid helps regulate the internal temperature through its lubricating properties. As the fluid levels dip, internal components may overheat, resulting in a burning smell and excessive noise from the transmission.
