How to choose the right nail

Nails are an important and versatile part of any handyperson's toolkit. Whether you're putting together crafts, fences, structural frames, roofs, or trim, we've got the right size and length for your project.

What are the types of nails?

The most common types include:

Finishing nails and brads are the smallest types of nails, used for crafts, paneling, and installing trim and molding.

Framing nails are heavy-duty, long nails used to secure structural pieces of lumber like 2x4s.

Siding nails are installed into exterior walls used to secure siding pieces together.

Roofing nails are short with a wide head and are designed to secure shingles.

How do I know which type of nail I need?

To know what type and size of nail you need for your project, just consider what you'll be doing. Nail types typically include their main purpose in the name. Framing nails are perfect for big pieces of lumber, finishing nails and brads are good for light-duty jobs. To choose the right length, you'll want to make sure the nail is shorter than the combined thickness of what you're nailing together.

What are galvanized nails?

Galvanized nails are coated with a protective layer of zinc that makes them resistant to rust and suitable for outdoor projects.
