What are electric winches?

An electric winch is a motorized device that is mounted to a vehicle’s front or rear bumper that is used for lifting and pulling loads. They are mainly used for towing applications.

Are there different types of winches?

From truck winches to trailer winches, ATV and UTV winches, Canadian Tire offers an assortment for all your towing, lifting, and hauling needs.

How does an electric winch work?

A winch is made up of a cable wire, a drum, a gear train, and a motor. Electric winches, in particular, use an electric motor. The cable wire is pulled out and attached to the object you’ll be towing. After attaching it, the motor is turned on to drive or power the drum that spools the wire.

Are accessories included with winches or sold separately?

There are winches that come with accessories such as cables, snatch blocks, and snap hooks, but not all. There are some accessories and other hardware that you may need for specific applications that are sold separately. From snatch blocks to D-ring shackles, ropes, and more, Canadian Tire has all the electric winch accessories you need for your winch.

What qualities or features should I look for in a winch?

When it comes to buying the right winch, one of the first things to consider is the winch capacity, also known as the "pull rating". You need a winch that can support your vehicle’s weight and how much it will be able to pull. It’s also important to find the right rope needed for the application. There are synthetic ropes, which are lighter and easier to handle, and steel ropes that are durable, long-lasting, and ideal for winching in tough terrain.
