Gauges and fittings play an important role in any type of vehicle. From your speedometer to your tachometer, fuel gauge and more, here is all you need to know about how gauges work and how to fix them when they start to act up.
The different types of gauges
Each vehicle has several different gauges that measure different components of your automobile. Depending on the type of vehicle, make and model, you may see different gauges. Some are the traditional type that read your speed, fuel level, engine heat and battery charge with a meter. Others show numbers. The different gauges in your vehicle, which are the most common are the speedometer (measuring speed,) tachometer (measuring your engine’s RPM or resolutions per minute), the fuel gauge which measures how much fuel your vehicle is running on and the temperature gauge which lets you know if your vehicle is about to overheat. It is important to ensure that these key gauges are working properly in order for you to feel safe any time you are operating your vehicle.
Troubleshooting gauges that don’t work
When one or more of your gauges aren’t working, it can feel disconcerting. Do not panic, there are ways to troubleshoot and tell what the problem is. Just remember that the troubleshooting process is related to how many gauges go out of order at once.
If all or more than one gauges stop working simultaneously, here’s what you should do:
Check the fuses first. The gauge fuse should have power on both sides with the ignition in the on position.
If the fuses are running, check for power at the instrument cluster.
If the instrument cluster has power, then check if a bad ground connection caused total failure.
When all else fails, the instrument cluster itself may have to be replaced.
When only one gauge stops working, do this:
Locate the sensor that connects to the malfunctioning gauge.
Disconnect the sensor, or connecting it to ground, depending on how the gauge works
Choosing a replacement gauge
You must choose the right type of replacement gauge for your vehicle, especially one that will not compromise the quality of your vehicle and its ability to run smoothly. Always consult an expert before buying a replacement gauge to confirm that it will not only fit your dashboard properly, but that it will keep your car or truck healthy and free of issues.
