What is the purpose of pipe insulation?

Pipe insulation is designed for hot water supply pipes, preventing heat loss as water travels to faucets and fixtures. Insulating your pipes can reduce your energy and water usage.

What type of pipe insulation is best?

Foil tape insulation can be used on both pipes and air ducts, so it can offer efficiency across your home heating and water systems. Ultimately the best insulation comes down to your preferences, plumbing and how easy it will be to install. Foam wraps are thicker than foil tape and offer relatively simple installation.

Does foam pipe insulation prevent freezing?

Passive insulation like foam or foil tape won't prevent freezing once the temperatures drop low enough. Heated pipe tracing cables can be taped onto pipes to keep them warm enough that freezing won't be a problem, but they do require a constant source of electricity.
