What is a hockey goalie stick?

Goalie sticks are made specifically for the goalie to use. They are typically held in the right hand and used with one hand, so the other is free to make catches.

How is a goalie stick different from regular hockey sticks?
Goalie sticks differ from regular sticks in that the lower part of the stick is wider, the angle is smaller, and the blades are taller. This is so goalies can adopt a wide stance while keeping the blade in contact with the ice. These sticks, along with proper hockey goalie equipment, are important to have to effectively stop the opponent from scoring goals.

How do you pick a goalie stick?
Determine whether you need a left-hand or right-hand stick and a junior or senior stick. Goalie sticks are made of the same materials as regular sticks - either a full composite construction, natural wood finish, or with a foam core. Some have fibreglass reinforcements in certain areas for extra durability. If you want to go into specifics, you can choose a stick with the right flex, curve, and weight to suit your preferences. Canadian Tire carries a range of hockey sticks for kids, youth, and adults from professional brands like CCM, Sherwood, and Warrior.

Do NHL goalies use wood sticks?
Very few NHL goalies still use wood sticks, as the NHL started to embrace the use of composite sticks in recent years. This was due to the lighter weight and comfortability.

What size goalie stick should I use?
To determine the right size goalie stick, consider the paddle length of the stick and your height. The blade should be flush with the ice when you’re in the proper stance.
