Whenever the seasons change, we start thinking about switching our summer tires to winter tires, and vice versa. While it’s important to have the right seasonal tires for driving safety, proper tire storage is also key in keeping your tires in tip-top condition. Incorrect storage can cause your tires to warp and/or deteriorate faster. As an expensive investment, you want to make sure you get the most out of your tires. At Canadian Tire, we offer a variety of storage solutions such as tire racks, covers, dollies, storage shelves and mobile tire stands from MotoMaster, Certified and more.
How Should Tires Be Stored: Flat or Upright?
How you store your tires depends on whether they have rims or not. Tires with rims should be stacked horizontally or hung up on a tire storage rack. If the tires don’t have rims, then they can be stored standing vertically upright.
Where is the Best Place to Store Tires?
You should never store your tires outdoors or in the garage, even if they are covered. The rubber may start to crack and dry due to the fluctuating temperature and weather conditions. The best place to store them is in a climate-controlled space like a basement. Always keep them in a dark and cool spot away from furnaces and windows with direct sunlight.
Even when stored indoors, you should always cover tires with a bag or tire cover. This protects them from dust and grime, and better preserves the rubber. Make sure the cover you use is free of moisture and airtight.
How Long Will Tires Last in Storage?
If you properly store you tires and take good care of them, they can last between 6 and 10 years. Before putting them in storage, it’s best to thoroughly clean them from grime and dirt buildup.
