When storms, blackouts or other outages hit your neighbourhood, standby generators keep your home powered up and functional for work and play.

How does a home stand-by generator work, and how is it different from portable generators?

During an outage, these generators switch on automatically to maintain or restore power. Stand by generators for home use connected to natural gas or propane systems installed in fixed positions unlike portable generators that can be transported if needed.

Can a home stand-by generator power the entire house, including HVAC systems?

A typical stand-alone generator for home use is designed to keep everything up and running including heating and cooling. It’s best to check wattage ratings of all your appliances and systems when choosing a generator.

How often should a home stand-by generator be tested and maintained for optimal performance?

Many standby generators have automated self-testing and maintenance functions. For further advice you can always consult the generator’s user manual or contact the manufacturer.

Are there specific maintenance requirements for home stand-by generators?

Oil filter changes, battery replacement, cleaning and other maintenance may be needed. It’s important to refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for your make and model. Compatible generator covers and accessories including battery or oil filter heater kits can also go a long way to keep a standby unit in top shape.
