How do I choose a trolling/outboard motor?

Choosing the correct outboard motor for your boat can be a challenging task. Here are some factors to consider before your next purchase.

Size is key. The size of your outboard motor should match the size of your boat. The shaft length of the trolling motor should also match the depth of your boat to ensure the motor can submerge deep enough in the water.

Power level matters. Consider the conditions you’ll be using the motor in and the size of your boat to determine the right amount of power or thrust, you’ll need.

Hand or foot control? Trolling motors can be controlled with a foot pedal, which provides hands-free operation, or hand control, which offers more precise control.

What size trolling/outboard motor do I need?

Usually, the trolling motor should provide at least 2 pounds of thrust for every 100 pounds of boat weight. However, navigating rough waters or higher speeds requires a more powerful motor.

How deep should your trolling/outboard motor be in the water?

Generally, submerge the trolling motor 12 inches below the waterline to ensure adequate power. If you frequently fish or boat in rough waters, your outboard motor should be 17 inches below the water line.
