From side steps and nerf bars to running boards and more, find a variety of options to enjoy easy access to your pickup truck or SUV.

Running boards, side bars, or side steps are accessories mounted to vehicles below the passenger side doors to provide additional footing when getting into a truck or reaching the roof. While each accessory has a similar goal of providing accessibility to passengers, their shape and design vary and are intended for slightly different purposes.
What are the step rails on a truck called?
Truck step rails go by different names: running board, side bars (nerf bars), and side steps. These accessories are suitable for tall and large vehicles, such as trucks, SUVs, or crossovers, and provide an accessible footing for passengers to get in or out.
What is the difference between running boards and side steps?
Truck running boards have a flatter and rectangular profile. They are mounted beneath the passenger doors and sit flush against the rocker panels. Running boards typically run the entire cabin length, and since they are mounted close to the doors, they offer considerable ground clearance. As a result, these are perfect for larger-size trucks and those looking for a wider surface area for footbeds.
Side steps for trucks or side bars have a similar function of offering accessibility footing while stepping in or out of vehicles. Unlike running boards, side bars have a more tubular or oval profile and do not sit flush against the rocker panels. However, side bars have a squared-off footbed beneath each door for securing footing and typically run the length of the cabin.
How do I choose the right running board?
Side bars or running boards serve the same goal of helping passengers by providing a secure footing. Due to their flatter profile, running boards offer slightly more accessible footing and are great for families with children. In some newer vehicles, they can be electronically retractable. Moreover, running boards offer protection against debris scratching or denting your doors while simultaneously allowing you to dust off dirt or snow while getting into your truck. However, since they sit closer to the doors, they aren't suitable for off-roading and take considerable effort to clean.
On the other hand, side steps or side bars are suitable for off-roading since they have a more streamlined profile. Since they are mounted lower than running boards, they offer a bit more accessibility while getting into your SUV. Due to their tubular shape, they're easier to clean but at the same time have a narrower stepping footbed. Moreover, they're aesthetically pleasing and look great on larger trucks or vehicles.
