There are a variety of fish hooks in different shapes, colours, and sizes, some of the most common being bait hooks, wide gap hooks, J-hooks, round jigheads, worm hooks, sickle hooks, and treble hooks.

• Bait hook – Common in freshwater and saltwater fishing, bait hooks are most suitable for live or dead bait such as clams, crickets, shrimp, worms, and more.

• Wide gap hook – Common for freshwater fishing and compatible with plastic softbaits such as worms and lizards.

• J-hook – Considered the most versatile and common hook for all types of fishing. Made for use with live, dead, and artificial baits.

• Round jighead – Similar to a Jhook, it provides additional weight through a weighted lead or tungsten piece

• Sickle hook – Sickle hooks resemble the shape of a sickle and are ideal for fishing with live minnows for crappie fishing.

• Treble hook – A treble hook features three J-hooks formed into one piece. They are used on artificial lures and are common in offshore fishing.

What size hook do I need for fishing?

The size you need will depend on the type of fishing hook you choose. However, a general rule of thumb is that for hook sizes 32 to 1, the larger the number, the smaller the hook. For hook sizes 1/0 to 19/0, the larger the number, the larger the hook.

What is the best hook for catch and release?

To reduce injury with catch and release fish, opt for barbless hooks or circle hooks. These two hooks reduce tissue damage as they can be removed quickly and easily.
