What are the different types of flashlights?

The main types of flashlights are handheld flashlights, headlamps, lanterns and spotlights. Handheld flashlights are helpful for a range of situations, from fixing a leaky faucet under the sink to finding your way in the dark during a power outage. Headlamps free your hands and lanterns can be placed to provide a pool of light. Utility lights and portable spotlights provide extra light where you need it.

What features should I look for when buying a flashlight?

Focus on features you need in a flashlight. For working, a headlamp, utility light, spotlight or magnetic flashlight are good options that provide hands-free lighting. Think about whether you need a weatherproof light, and whether you want a rechargeable light or one that uses replaceable batteries. Finally, choose a size that will be comfortable for you to use, and a level of brightness that fits your needs.

How many lumens should I look for when buying a flashlight?

For getting around your home in the dark, 30 to 100 lumens will generally be enough. You'll want 300 or more lumens for spotlights and utility lights, especially if you’re using them on the job.
