What are the different types of garage door opener?

There are two main types of garage door openers, including chain drive and belt drive openers. Chain drive openers are considered more powerful and are stronger, making them well-suited for opening large or heavy doors. Belt drive openers are much quieter, faster, and require less maintenance, but are also less powerful. Wall-mounted openers are easy to maintain, highly secure, take up virtually no overhead space, and make the least amount of noise, but are typically less powerful and require space and electricity adjacent to the door

The average cost of a typical garage door opener is about $400. Light duty, basic chain-drive openers can cost as little as $200, while heavy-duty, full-feature belt-drive or wall-mount openers can cost up to $600. Additional accessories and hardware, like backup batteries, can further increase the cost.

What is the easiest garage door opener to install?

Universal chain and belt drive openers are about equally challenging to install and come with user instructions to guide you through all the steps. Wall-mount garage door openers can be a little trickier to install, but still come with step-by-step instructions.

What features should I look for in a garage door opener?

Choose an opener powerful enough to lift your door. Double-wide garage doors can require up to 1-1/4 horsepower depending on what material they are made of, while 1/2 horsepower openers are suitable for standard single width doors. Wall-mount openers maximize overhead space in your garage for extra light fixtures, fans, or storage. If you have a lot of smart devices or a smart home system, Wi-Fi-enabled garage door openers could be a good option for you. Features like manufacturer warranties and enhanced security can give you peace of mind.
