What is the purpose of a power inverter?

A power inverter is a device that takes your car or truck battery’s direct current (DC) and turns it into alternating current (AC), which then allows you to power a multitude of devices and appliances.

Are power inverters bad for your car?

Power inverters are not inherently bad for your car, but they can deplete your battery and put stress on the alternator if not used properly. While not all vehicles are equipped to run effortlessly with a power inverter, you can use one by following a few precautions. First, make sure you are not overworking your battery. Determine the capacity of the battery and keep in mind that using an inverter when your vehicle is not running will deplete the battery at a much faster pace. Using the inverter while your vehicle is running ensures the battery will be topped up by the alternator. However, this could also overload the alternator, given that they are generally not designed to power more than the electronics of the vehicle itself. You can prevent this issue by taking note of the rated output of your alternator and getting an adequate power inverter.

Additional information for residents of Quebec only: The regular annual rate for persons applying for the Triangle Mastercard and the Triangle World Elite Mastercard is 21.99% for cash transactions and related fees and 21.99% for all other charges.
