What's the difference between flush and semi-flush mount lights?

Flush mount lighting sits directly against the ceiling and is a practical solution for hallways and other areas that require smaller lighting options.

Semi-flush ceiling lights hang slightly lower, creating a more dramatic effect. They often feature decorative elements such as crystals or shades.

Do I need flush or semi-flush mount lights?
