How to choose a cat collar

For cats that are ready to venture outdoors, it’s important to ensure that they are well-equipped and safe to do so. Just like for dogs, collars and harnesses are essential for safety and you may also want to attach a cat tracker and ID to your cat for peace of mind. What collars are best for cats?

There are a variety of collars that can suit your specific needs. Some types of cat collars include:

• Flea and tick collars – These collars are designed to kill and repel fleas and ticks.

• Traditional buckle collars – These come with a standard buckle that allows you to adjust and open the collar.

• Reflective collars – Especially effective at nighttime, these collars are made with reflective fabric that can reflect bright light from car headlights.

• Breakaway collars – These come with a unique buckle that unfastens if something pulls against it, which is ideal if your cat gets stuck on an object.

What type of harness is best for cats that are being harness trained?

Standard cat harnesses with adjustable straps and buckle closures are most suitable for harness training. Ensure you measure your cat around the chest and neck to pick a properly fitting harness. Depending on your cat’s preferences, they may prefer a figure-eight harness over a vest harness, so they aren’t as restricted. However, vests are much harder for cats to escape from.
