How does hydroponic gardening work?

Hydroponic gardening is a primarily indoor gardening style where the water does the work. As opposed to a traditional garden that requires sunlight, nutrients, water, and soil, the hydroponic system has nutrients dissolved in the water surrounding the roots. However, there are also other types of systems where soil substitutes are used. The garden is housed in a container that has a grow light, a growing medium, and sometimes an air pump. Here are the main steps to get started:

1. Germinate your seeds or cuttings.

2. Transplant your rooted plugs into the hydroponics system.

3. Add water and appropriate nutrients.

4. Turn on the system to continuously pump nutrient solution to your plants.

5. Monitor growth and replace the water every 1 to 2 weeks.

Is hydroponic gardening the same as indoor gardening?

The hydroponic method is a type of indoor gardening, but indoor gardening can simply refer to taking care of potted plants in an indoor space. These plants still utilize traditional methods of gardening, whereas hydroponics does not.

How to start hydroponic gardening as a beginner?

Beginning an indoor hydroponic garden is easy. To start, decide what plants you’re looking to grow. This will help you choose the type of hydroponic grow system to use, the amount of space needed, and the lighting you’ll need. Many grow systems have built-in timers, lighting systems, and sometimes LED displays that remind you to feed and water the plants.

What supplies and systems do I need to start my hydroponic garden?

If you’re not purchasing a hydroponics kit and want to build one from scratch, you’ll need a grow tray, reservoir, nutrients, a growing medium, grow light, thermometer, water pump, drippers, and other hydroponic specific equipment depending on the system you want to use.
