It is possible to replace your car's door handles yourself, but the level of difficulty will vary from car to car. Replacing your exterior door handles is harder compared to replacing your interior door handles. If you don’t have the right tools for the job or if you’re unsure about the procedure, book an appointment with your local Canadian Tire Auto Service Centre and have one of our professionals do it for you.
How to Replace a Car Door Handle
To replace your interior door handle, you’ll have to remove your car door's interior trim panel and the bolts and clips that hold the door handle in place. You will also need to disconnect the wires that are attached to it. Install the new handles and then secure them with bolts and clips. For an exterior car door handle replacement, you will need to remove the door panel to gain access to the door handle attachments. Unbolt the door handle assembly, disconnect wires, and unhook the rod connecting to the latch. Ensure any rubber gaskets are in place and then slide the door handle in. Reconnect any wiring and locking mechanisms.
What are the parts of a car door handle?
Car doors have exterior and interior door handles that are attached to a long metal rod that extends to the door latch. Other parts of a car door handle include the power lock actuator, a lock cylinder, and the door handle bezel.
