    Q: I need this size battery for starting my motorhome and starting my boat and because of awkward access I'd prefer maintenance-free batteries. Is this battery maintenance-free?

    • A: Generally, "maintenance-free" batteries use lead-calcium alloy in both the positive and negative grids to minimize water loss. Conversely, true deep cycle batteries tend to use lead-antimony alloy in both the positive and negative grids which increases water lose (requires topping up) but improves performance and longevity in cycling applications. This battery is a "hybrid" of sorts, using lead-calcium and lead-antimony to provide a blend of each's benefits. This does mean that this battery is not maintenance-free but will minimize how often you may need to top it up. (Of course, you could choose to never top it up, but then you wouldn't be maximizing it's potential service life.) As mentioned in another response, you could consider an AGM (or Gel) 8D battery. Also, if the battery is only ever going to be used for starting engines (i.e. not cycling / house power), then you could also consider using 3 or 2 marine starting batteries (such as MotoMaster Nautilus 010-2493 or 010-2495) connected in parallel. These are maintenance-free batteries (and easier to move around given each's smaller size and weight).

    Q: Is this an FLD or SLD battery? Flooded lead acid or sealed lead acid.

    • A: This is flooded/wet battery. For a sealed version of an 8D battery, consider models 010-2104 (AGM) or 010-1110 (Gel).

    • A: This battery can be used in starter, deep cycle or dual purpose applications. When used in a dual purpose or deep cycle application, electrolyte level will need to be maintained (topped-up) due to fluid losses that naturally occur during the repetitive charging process.
