Battery does what it's supposed to

I've purchased many of these in the past for remote, low power applications of sensors, sondes and water samplers. Always does what we need it to when we use it with a 40W+ solar panel keeping it charged. Good stuff.

Canadian Tire really wants me to review this batte

After numerous emails from CT asking me to review this battery, I am finally giving in. I have 2 of these batteries connected to a solar panel and inverter for my off-grid cabin. These are able to run lights and a tv/blu-ray player for many hours. So far, I have watched Frozen, and Frozen 2. I prefer the second, as it allows Elsa to expand as a character, while offering a deeper loom at her own vulnerability. The battery is quite boxy looking, so if aesthetics are your primary concern, this may not be the one for you. The battery is also quite heavy. I assume that's because it contains large ingots of precious metal, but I haven't opened it up to look. There is also some sort of liquid inside, you can hear it sloshing around if you shake the battery. I'm no expert, but it's most likely 100 proof rum. Milk would go bad, and I don't think it has as many electrons. To summarize, if you are looking for a deep cycle battery to watch Disney movies over and over somewhere without electrical utilities, I highly recommend this one.

The battery appears to be good. It hasn't been installed very long, so it remains to be seen how it's extended life and performance will be.

Q: What type of battery is this: flooded lead acid, agm...? It is in a camper I purchased connected to a solar system. Do I have to vent and top this battery up; if so, how do I do that? Can this type of battery release toxic fumes in my van?

  • A: It's @ least twice now that the term 'ionized water' has been used to designate the type of water to be added to cover the internal plates when electrolyte level is low; I'm fairly certain the proper term is "Deionized water" , just for accuracy! HTH

Q: Is this a "dual purpose" battery that can be used for cranking and deep cycle applications?

  • A: Absolutely. I use it for my RV trailer, but it’s fine to turn over a motor and be used for deep cycle to fully drain and charge back up

Q: That battery came with the pop-up camper we just bought. I stored the battery indoors for winter (~18degC). Do I need to plug it all winter to a trickle charger for maintenance? Other maintenance to do yearly? Thanks!

2 Answers
  • A: You can leave a maintenance charger on the battery all winter OR charge the battery a couple of times during winter storage. Other maintenance... Wipe/clean the top of the battery. Pop the caps off to check fluid level regularly. If level is below internal plates, add distilled or ionized water to cover the plates. (How often you'll need to add water depends on usage/charging regimen. Start by checking every month and then you can adapt to less often, as required.)

Q: Went to store to buy this battery for my 60Hp outbd pontoon. Store stated that this would not power the boat. Would only turn it on/start it. Upon inspection of physical battery, it does not state anywhere that it is deep cycle. Can anyone help advise?

2 Answers
  • A: This is a deep cycle battery capable of repeated cycles of discharge and charge to provide continuous power. Whether one battery is sufficient to support your application depends on how much load and for how long between charges. (As most batteries, it is also suitable for engine cranking.)
