Types of Clamps & Vises

How many types of clamps are there?

The different types of clamps include:

· Bar Clamps: With quick-change jaws that can be adjusted based on the bar’s length, these clamps can grip objects narrow or wide. Bar clamps can include trigger clamps, pipe clamps, F-clamps, quick action clamps, and more.

· Locking Clamps: For strong, versatile grips, locking clamps are the way to go. Locking clamps such as C-clamps use an adjustable clamp to grip workpieces on a fixed frame while some clamps use a ratcheting mechanism to hold objects.

· Corner Clamps: These clamps are essential for clamping two items at a 45-degree or 90-degree angle to secure joints. These are helpful for framing, carpentry, and other woodworking projects.

How many types of vises are there?

There are many types of vises available including:

· Bench Vises: Like most bar clamps, bench vises have one adjustable jaw and one fixed jaw. They are built with a screw mechanism and handle that adjusts the length and strength of grip. These vises usually have mounting holes to fix them to your workspace and can have a swivel base up to 360-degrees.

· Quick Action Vises: These vises are one-handed like trigger clamps and hold onto items using a sliding jaw.

· Drill Vises: These vises hold wood and metal objects in place for drilling projects.

What projects require clamps?

Projects that can require clamps include woodworking and metalworking. Bar clamps such as F clamps are essential for gluing projects, pipe clamps are useful for piping and plumbing projects, ratcheting clamps work well with plastics, and trigger clamps helping you multitask and work faster. Locking clamps give you increased control over grip strength by handling anything from thin sheets of metal to sturdy wooden planks and corner clamps hold objects together for framing, designing, and other woodworking and carpentry projects.

What projects require vises?

Vises can be used for carpentry, construction and more and while not required, they can help build high quality and durable products. Bench vises are designed to be fixed to your worktable and can improve precision for sawing, finishing, sanding, grinding, nail pulling, and general projects. Quick action vises are similar but provide ease of use with a quick release mechanism, and drill vises are mainly used for drilling projects. Vises also cover more surface area of any given item and can keep wide items stable when gripping.
