What are the different types of extension cords?

The two main types of extension cords are indoor cords and outdoor cords. Indoor cords come in a variety of formats, from travel size to multi-outlet sizes. Outdoor extension cords are weatherproofed, tend to be longer, and are often heavy-duty gauge whether they are single or multi-outlet.

What should I look for when buying an extension cord?

You'll want to make sure the cord has enough outlets for where you'll be using it, as well as enough length to reach where you need. Cord gauge and amperage ratings are also important as they determine the amount of electricity it can safely provide. If you will use your cord for multiple tools or accessories, a fan tail or multi-outlet type is a good investment.

Which extension cords are safe?

By their design, all extension cords are safe when used as intended. Damaged or overloaded extension cords can cause fires, and cords should not be used as a permanent electric connection. Bright-coloured cords are highly visible and can help prevent trips and tangles.

What does the color of an extension cord mean?

There is no universal colour-coding system for extension cords. Manufacturers may prefer certain colours for certain uses, like green for outdoors, white for indoors, and red or orange for heavy duty cords.
