What is interior stain used for?

Interior stains are often applied to wood surfaces to add colour and enhance their appearance. Stains can help bring wood surfaces in line with other parts of a room such as furniture or wall paint.

What is interior finish used for?

Interior finishes are applied after staining and create a protective seal over the wood that prevents scratches, water damage, and fading over time.

What's the difference between interior stain and finish?

Stains add colour to wood when applied, while finishes are usually added after staining to seal the wood and protect it.

What are the types of interior stains and finish?

Interior wood stains come in lighter and heavier formulas: lighter ones leave the wood colour mostly unchanged, while heavier ones tend to darken it. Oil-based stains take longer to dry than water-based ones.

For finishes, the main distinction is whether they are water-based or oil-based. Water-based finishes are lighter, dry quicker, and release less fumes. Oil-based finishes are softer, less likely to get scratched, and add a darker colour to wood, but release a lot of fumes and strong odours.
