Q: Can this be painted over with an exterior paint?

A: Depends upon the paint. This item is water based, so a water based paint could be applied on top. Just insure that you sand lightly to get good adhesion of new coat. If you use an oil base or solvent base paint on top you will need to use an appropriate primer to prevent a paint reaction. Best to test in a small hidden area to observe if there is a reaction.

Q: Does this varnish need a ventilated area?

A: It's water based, so as a result the volume of VOC's is very low and should be safe to apply indoors. Just be sure there is some amount of ventilation. I wouldn't use it in a confined space.

A: Hi Chris, While our Varathane Diamond Exterior Finish Water-Based has been specifically formulated to provide maximum protection against sun, water, weather, sea spray and chemicals, it is not water proof.
