Great product, easy application, great finish!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I use Gunstock 231 for most of my finishes. I love the look it adds to oak. Between the penetrating stain and the Minwax water based Poly, two great products.

Yes, I recommend this product.

  • Bottom and middle shelf are gunstock231 on pine boards with the Minwax water based poly topcoat. Barrel itself is just the poly over oak boards.

Q: Can you use this product on a finished surface? Trying to use on a microwave cart that was scratched severly during a move......

  • A: You will never be able to match the same color because the wood that you would be staining is aged there for darkening and lightening has been done, you can stain finished wood but if it is sealed with sanding sealer the Minwax stain will not adhere to the finish parts of the wood.

Q: What are the before and after products to use if I'm planning to use this on a patio table that came with bare wood? Sand it first and apply a clear gloss after this product or can I skip the sanding step as the table has no other product on it?

  • A: Hello. Thanks for the interest. You need to first sand the wood in the direction of the grain using fine-grade sandpaper (#220) until smooth. Once our stain is applied, then allow the stain to penetrate 5-15 minutes to achieve desired color. The more time the stain is allowed to penetrate, the richer and darker the color will be. Remove stain that has not absorbed into the wood with a clean cloth. Wipe in the direction of the grain, while blending light and dark areas to obtain uniform color. DO NOT ALLOW STAIN THAT HAS NOT PENETRATED INTO THE WOOD TO DRY ON THE WOOD SURFACE. To darken the color, apply a second coat after 2-4 hours, repeating directions above. DO NOT SAND BETWEEN COATS OF STAIN. You are now ready to apply one of our exterior-rated protective finishes. They all offer similar durability: https://www.minwax.com/wood-products/clear-protective-finishes/interior-exterior/. Best of success with your patio table project. • A: You need to have a warm room with air circulation if the room is cold it may not dry very quick, just put a fan on it and keep the fire going, keep the room warm this is very important to the process and its also depending on what type of wood you are using because some woods soak in better than others eg. (hard wood vs. soft wood soft wood soaks in faster, hard wood takes a bit longer due to density).

Q: Does Canadian Tire carry the Minwax stain in "Special Walnut"?

1 Answer
  • A: Thank you for taking the time to ask us a question. No, Canadian Tire isn't showing up as a retailer that is selling Special Walnut. Rona, Lowes and Home Hardware are the leading retailers of that color stain. If you have any other questions, please contact us directly at 1-800-523-9299 or info@cbgbrandreview.com. Q: Does wood finish semi transparent need a coat of varnish after application

  • A: Thank you for your question. The stain just adds color, it does not offer protection. You would need to use a product on top to protect the surface. Sincerely, L.T., Digital Care Team

Q: Do I need to apply a conditioner to softwood (pine) prior to the application of this Minwax stain?

  • A: Thanks for taking the time to ask a question. To help prevent the stain from soaking into the wood unevenly, we suggest using Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. If you have any questions, please contact us directly at (800) 523-9299 or info@cbgbrandreview.com. Sincerely, R.C., Digital Care Team

Q: Which one should i get if I want to "re-glaze" (re-stain) outdoor patio wood tiles that already have finishing? Is there a transparent one? it's not in bad condition, just that i want to "re polish" it to make it look nice and prepare for season.

  • A: A clear exterior topcoat can be applied to improve the look of the furniture and provide protection from the elements. Minwax Helmsman Spar Varnish is an ideal choice. It comes in 3 different sheens. 2 or 3 thin coats will provide a refreshed new look. Always test in a small area to ensure comparability with finish that is currently on the furniture. Sand lightly before applying each coat.
