Q: Would I be able to use this on my cupboards that are looking a little worse for wear. They are standard early 90s plyboard cabinets.

A: Hi Onlyanichols, You would have to remove all previous coatings in order to apply our Varathane Ultimate Wood Stain to your plyboard cabinets. Remove any existing finishes with sandpaper or stripper. Prepare bare wood for staining by sanding in the direction of the grain. Begin with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through to #220 grits. Before staining, remove all sanding dust, dirt, grease or glue with a vacuum, or clean rag dampened with mineral spirits. Be sure to test your stain to verify the desired colour. Apply the stain in an inconspicuous area.

Q: How long does the 3x stain take to cure before you can apply a water based polyurethane?

A: it is dry enough to sand lightly and recoat . it takes a full 24 hours to dry to full hardness.

A: It may, depending on how heavily the stain is applied. To eliminate all risk of rub-off, we recommend sealing the stain with one of Varathane's oil, or waterbased clear coats.

Q: i want to use the Varathane for my wood floor, would i need to covered it with vanish after it in a hight traffic area(daycare), underneath my floor it't a nice old wood floor.

A: Yes, the Ultimate Stain can be used on a wood floor that has been stripped back to bare wood. Once applied, it will need to be protected with a clear floor finish like a Varathane Professional oil-based finish.

Q: will this actually turn light color wood into a dark espresso color with a can of this ? I want to stain my wood kitchen table, because it was my dads and he passed away and I'd like to make it a dark espresso .. I tried "miniwax" (a yellow can) of dark stain and it barley made a change

A: The Varathane Ultimate Wood Stain is our most dense stain but it is semi-transparent, which means the color of the wood it's applied to will inform the final color. Make sure you've sanded the table down to bare wood, and test a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure you are satisfied with the color.
