Advantages of Exterior Wood Stains

Stains make it easy to start preserving outdoor wood and make it look more beautiful, by adding a darkening tint that protects and that can also enhance the natural look of wood.

What are the different types of exterior stain?

Transparent stains contain the least pigment, so they allow the natural colour of wood to stay unchanged, but still protect against UV light.

Semi-Transparent stains still show the grain of the wood but add a lot more protective pigment so that the colour of treated wood deepens.

Solid stains offer the most protection against UV light and moisture, but also cover most of the wood grain and appearance.

Some exterior stains have sealer mixed in, so you can stain and seal at the same time.

Which is better: exterior paint or stain?

This depends on the look you want for your outdoor wood surfaces. Stain preserves the natural grain of wood, and unlike paint, it allows wood to 'breathe', which helps prevent rot and warping. Paint offers a greater range of colours and seals in the wood, so proper coverage will still protect it.

What are the advantages of stained wood?

Compared to unstained wood, it is more protected against the elements, resistant to damage from sunlight, and water-resistant. In addition, stains can enhance the look of wood, making it blend in or stand out against your home or yard.

Is it cheaper to use stain or paint?

Staining wood is often less expensive than painting it, as stain does not require a layer of primer and offers better coverage as it is thinner than paint.

How much stain do I need for my project?

A good rule of thumb is to use 1 gallon of stain per 175 square feet of wood surface you want to stain.
