Awesome product, brought my deck back to life, looks great and water beads nicely. Get it all on the first coat because if you try to go back for a second coat it will just bead on top of the first coat. Best deck stain i've ever used. Wish i could post a before snd after picture

Q: Which is it? Says oil based but specifications say cleans up with soap and water??? confused. If oil based what is the VOC? safe for pets? does it penetrate? does it need to be stripped years later when doing again or can it go right over top?

A: Hi Rob, interesting how Canadian Tire reached out to me to help answer your question. I’m a consumer like you, who recently applied Cabot stain to my shed. My shed is made out of white cedar and was previously stained when I had built it probably about 8-10 years ago. I just recently re-stained it with Cabot. I power washed the old stain off as best as possible, and reapplied the new stain once the wood was completely dry. I gave the wood a light sanding with an orbital sander so the stain penetrates wood better. The stain went on beautifully, shed looks fabulous after 2 years now, no peeling or flaking abd water still repels. I haven’t had to clean it yet. I can’t speak to whether it’s safe for pets or it’s VOC, but I imagine it’s completely safe. You’ll have to investigate further if desired. Hope this helps!

Q: I applied one coat of this stain to my PT lumber deck. The finish is a bit uneven and there are lap marks. What's the best way to smooth the finish out, can I give it a 2nd coat, or rub mineral spirits into the marks to blend them in?

A: Thank you for taking the time to contact us. You could lightly sand the darker areas to remove the stain in the overlapping areas that appears darker. To determine if you should apply more stain, perform a "Water Test". The water test is accomplished by dripping some water on the surface of the substrate. If the water penetrates into the surface and makes it noticeably darker, then it is ready for another coat of Thompsons.
