What's the difference between a trolley jack and a floor jack?

Floor jacks and trolley jacks are a type of car jack that have the same function of lifting vehicles up for maintenance or repairs with slight differences.

What mainly sets the two apart are the range of lifting heights. Trolley jacks have a wider range of clearance and are available in different weight capacities making it easier to do automotive tasks on a variety of vehicles. Floor jacks also give good clearance, but they have a lighter construction in comparison to trolley jacks. They are typically recommended for quick and infrequent use.

What are trolley jacks used for?

Other differences can be seen in their structure and design. Trolley jacks are bulky with wheels attached for mobility whereas floor jacks are lightweight and can easily be lifted. As opposed to trolley jacks, floor jacks are easier to set up.

As with any type of car jack, always use a jack or axle stand in combination with a floor jack or trolley jack. They are not designed to sustain the vehicle’s weight alone while it’s lifted.

Are trolley jacks good?

Trolley jacks are preferred by most mechanics and numerous car owners because of their reliability, stability and heavy-duty structure.

Additional information for residents of Quebec only: The regular annual rate for persons applying for the Triangle Mastercard and the Triangle World Elite Mastercard is 21.99% for cash transactions and related fees and 21.99% for all other charges. The minimum payment is the sum of (a) the greater of: (i) interest and fees shown on your statement + $10; or (ii) 5% of the New Balance, excluding amounts on special payment plans, (b) any balance over your credit limit, (c) any amounts past due not included in (b) above, and (d) the amount of any equal payments plan instalments then due.
