Fishing Navigation Systems and Fish Finders

Navigation systems and fish finders are great devices to have while out on the open water. Canadian Tire has a variety of fish finders and boat GPS systems from top brands such as Garmin, Lowrance, and more for a successful fishing trip.

Do fish finders really work?

Fish finders are effective tools to help detect a school of fish. They also provide information about the water, such as the depth, condition of the seabed, and more. This is done through ultrasonic waves transmitted underneath the boat. The processor unit takes this information and displays it on the colour LCD screen. Stronger reflections will be shown in orange or red and weaker ones in green or blue. For example, a high density of fish or a rocky seabed will result in stronger signals.

What features should I look for in a fish finder?

Before purchasing a fish finder, think about the environment where you fish. There are many features to consider, such as the resolution of the display, the transmitting power offered, the type of frequencies that will work best for your area, and the size of the device’s footprint. Some finders even offer a variety of other functions such as marine GPS or a chart plotter.

Why should I buy an underwater camera?

Will a car GPS work in a boat?

Car GPS units are not made to withstand the outdoor conditions of fishing or boating as they are not waterproof or durable enough for the job. As well, they won’t be programmed with aquatic maps and will not be able to show you detailed information on the shoreline, water depth, and topography.

Which features should I look for in a boat GPS?

A marine GPS should provide an accurate reading for speed, distance, and time, and have an easy-to-read map. If you want something more advanced, you can even opt for devices with auto guidance and increased geospatial information.
