A: Hi Butch, yes absolutely this Striker 4 fish finder can be used portable or mounted on a boat. It's important to note that the power cable within the portable kit is very short, designed specifically for that compact kit. If you wanted to connect to a boat you would need to purchase a full length accessory power cable, part number 010-12199-04.

Q: Is this a good finder for salt water fishing?

A: The Striker 4 Portable will function fine in salt water and is built for the environment. You should know that depth performance of all transducers can be decreased by up to 30% in saltwater, so you should not expect this entry-level sonar to perform beyond 250ft depth in saltwater.

A: The product itself will work fine in salt water or fresh water - it really depends on depth you plan to fish. For shallow water/shoreline fishing this product will be suitable. For fishing in depths greater than 100ft in salt water it would not be recommended.

Q: Can the battery be charged with a portable solar panel?

A: This would be difficult to guarantee as there are so many third-party solar charging options and none have been tested. The charger that comes with the Striker 4 Portable plugs into a standard wall outlet (AC), so at the very least you'd need the solar panel to charge and store power in some form of a power bank with a standard AC output.

A: The full Striker 4 Portable Kit weighs about 10.8 lbs. It's a small portable 12V battery that fits in the small bag, not a car battery. Typically battery life on one charge is approx. 10 hours of use, which can vary slightly depending on temperature.
