What are the differences between a hockey cage, mask, and shield?

Hockey cages offer full protection for your face but can be distracting to look through if you aren’t accustomed to it. They are commonly worn by youth players. A similar alternative is full-face hockey masks that are often made with high-impact polycarbonate with anti-scratch and anti-fog coatings. Hockey visors or shields only cover the top half of the face and are most common among professional players.

Why are cages, masks, and shields important?

Hockey face guards are important to wear during every game as they protect the face from hockey pucks, high sticks, and accidental hits.

How do I know which cage, mask, or shield to buy?

Consider the amount and type of protection you want to have on the ice. If you are opting for a cage or visor, you’ll need to ensure it fits your helmet. For beginner players, it’s best to choose a type that offers the most protection and coverage. Canadian Tire has a range of all three protection types from Bauer and CCM.
