How to use drain cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners can eliminate tough blockages and clogs that hot water and a plunger can't. Our selection includes general uncloggers and drain cleaners designed for removing hair in the shower, or food scraps in the kitchen, plus chemical and enzyme-based cleaners.

When should I use a drain cleaner or unclogger?

Most drain uncloggers are designed for kitchen and bathroom sinks, showers and bathtub drains. They should not be used in toilets. If a drain has backed up and is full of water, you will need to wait until it's drained or emptied to add drain cleaner.

How do drain cleaners and uncloggers work?

Drain openers and uncloggers contain powerful chemicals that react with and dissolve organic matter like hair, grease, food scraps and other obstructions. Some drain cleaners use natural enzymes and bacteria, which dissolve blockages more slowly, but work well over time to maintain pipes.

Are drain cleaners bad for my pipes?

Some drain cleaners create a lot of heat when they react with clogs, which usually won't cause a problem for most types of pipes. The powerful chemicals used in drain cleaners can eat away at clogs, but also pipes, so it's best to use them sparingly. Drain cleaners typically indicate what types of household pipes they are safe for, and whether they are safe for septic systems. Drain cleaners can also damage surfaces like porcelain and ceramic, so you should be careful to only add it into the drain.

When should you not use drain cleaners?

If a clog isn't too bad or you can loosen it with a plunger or another plumbing tool, you should avoid using cleaners as they are a last-ditch solution. Never mix different types of drain cleaners, and never use them on blockages that aren't grease, hair, or organic, as some can react dangerously if other chemicals or materials are in the drain. Make sure to wear eye protection and gloves when handling drain cleaners.

WestJet Points Earn Rate: Linked Members will earn WestJet points at participating locations including Canadian Tire and Party City retail store locations (both of which are independently owned and operated), SportChek, Mark’s, L’Équipeur, Pro Hockey Life, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, Atmosphere, L’Entrepôt du Hockey and participating Sports Experts locations across Canada (collectively referred to as “Participating  Stores”) at the following rates: a. one (1) WestJet point for every two dollars ($2.00) CAD of eligible pre-tax spend at Participating Stores when paying with cash, debit, or any credit card other than an eligible WestJet credit card; b. two (2) WestJet points for every two dollars ($2.00) CAD of eligible pre-tax spend when paying with a WestJet credit card issued in the form of:(i) one (1) WestJet point as noted in (a) above; and(ii) one (1) WestJet point as a Credit Card Bonus.Other: At Participating Stores Linked Members are required to either scan their Triangle Rewards card, input the numbers of their linked Triangle Rewards account, use another Cardless Method, or pay with their Triangle credit card issued by Canadian Tire Bank. For WestJet Eligible Purchases, Linked Members are required to enter their WestJet Rewards ID prior to the departure of a flight segment. For Eligible Purchases at Participating Stores, Linked Members will earn WestJet points within forty-eight (48) hours.  For WestJet Eligible Purchases, Linked Members will earn CT Money within thirty (30) days of completion of a flight segment (any single takeoff and landing by an aircraft). Linked Members can convert WestJet points into CT Money at a rate of one hundred twenty (120) WestJet points to one dollar ($1.00) in CT Money.   A minimum of two thousand four hundred (2400) WestJet points must be transferred.  WestJet reserves the right to change the conversion rate and/or impose conversion limits (minimum/maximums) from time to time, in its sole discretion, subject to applicable laws and regulations. Conversion is optional and initiated solely by the Linked Member. Converted WestJet points will be permanently deducted from the Linked Member’s WestJet Rewards Account and replaced with CT Money, subject to the Triangle Rewards Program Terms and Conditions. Conversion transactions cannot be reversed, cancelled or converted back once completed. You can unlink your Triangle Rewards Account and WestJet Rewards Account at any time; however, prior to unlinking, Linked Members must ensure any rewards that are earned have been processed and credited to their rewards account.
