I got a lemon

I would like to bring to your kind attention that I recently (about a week ago) bought an FPC series 5 liter pressure cooker.
After reading the instruction booklet that came with it, I followed each step as explained and then fired it up on my electric stove. When the fluid started to boil I closed the lid and waited the the red button to pop out. Instead, the steam started to leak between the lid and the pot where the handle is. So I turned everything off and safely removed the lid to see if the rubber gasket is out of place but it seemed that it wasn't. I did notice that the locking nub on the lid pushes the gasket toward the center of the lid hence the gasket doesn't seat properly between the lid and the pot.
No, I do not recommend this product.

Q: Can this pressure cooker be used for canning?
Smaller sized jars maybe?

A: In theory, yes.
In practice, the USDA pressure canning guidelines do not recommend pressure cookers for canning because they are lighter than pressure canners. Their lighter weight makes them heat up and cool down faster than a heavier canning vessel. This alters the process time if you start timing say, when the steam starts venting, a heavy pressure canner may take 5 or more minutes longer to get to the point where steam starts venting. In the mean time, the food product is warming up during that time. The length of time it takes to cook the vessel also is considered part of the 'processing' time and this time is considerably shorter in a pressure cooker.
I do use this model as a canner but I use it at the same time that I am using my pressure canner. What I do is monitor the temperatures and I make sure the cooker is at least as hot as the canner for at least as long by slowly manipulating the burner heat to try simulating what would be taking place in an actual canner.
Also, this model apparently only goes up to 11.6 PSI so you would not be able to process any foods that require higher pressure than that. There is a way around this but it requires using the product in a way other than the manufacturer intended and could be dangerous.

Q: Can I use as a Deep Fryer?
I wanted to know if I could put oil in there and seal it, and use it to cook chicken
16 years ago
2 Answers
A: I wouldn't. Deep fryers are made with baskets and protective covers for a reason, and I have no idea how oil would react under pressure.
Pressure cooking a chicken then giving it a quick browning in the over will yield you a wonderful, tasty product.

Q: where do I get a new fusible safety screw?
Steam is coming out of the fusible safety device and makes the pressure cooker unuseable

A: You can fix the problem by making a dough of flour (like playdo) and sticking it on top of the fusible safety screw and that should seal it =)
