Blotchy spray - OLD stock? Last two cans in the store

The paint was a perfect match for our car, but the spray came out in blotches and blobs, despite a massive amount of shaking. A second can had the same issues. I tried it on a vertical surface with a heavy coat that flowed and produced a good surface (and dripped off the bottom of the sample surface), but on the hood of my car, the blotches and bubbles just sat there. After putting a heavy coat on, I sanded it with 300 grit paper and got a flat surface, but with no glaze. A clear top coat spray (with a good fine spray pattern) gave me the gloss, but with a lot of work from start to finish. The cost was vastly less than the body shop wanted and the car IS 18 years old, so I figure it was good enough. I did not see any date on the cans that might help explain the spray quality so I don't know if age might be a factor. If I wanted to use this product again, I would try it on a good test surface before spraying it on the car.
