    Only filters once well

Was on a 4 day back country trip with a large group so I wanted a 2nd water filtration unit in addition to the platypus unit we have had for many years. We are very knowledgeable on using gravity filtration units. The first filtration was fast and then it got slower to basically non existent. We always gather water from the middle of the lake for both systems we had and only this one had issues, even after back flushing with clean water. Because we needed lots of water for our group of 13, we eventually connected to the filter and hoses from our more expensive unit to just keep the water going. At least the dirty water bag is large capacity. I wish I could return this thing and use the money towards another platypus unit.

No, I do not recommend this product.

I also can't understand the low rating on this, works perfectly. The people whining about flow either can't read, are incompetent or have a defective product. My 1st use, it filtered quickly, used for 3 days at -2°C - +2°C, thankfully it didn't freeze. Reverse flushed it with filtered water and stored it poorly. 2nd use, I noticed slow flow rate. I removed filter and gave it a "whip motion" to clear any obstructions. Took 2 seconds and worked great the rest of the trip. Crystal clear water output. When I 1st took a sip of this filters water from Georgian bay, I had flashbacks from when I was a kid. The water was the best tasting water I've had since I was younger. Great product in my opinion.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

I don't know why this has such a low rating. I've been using it happily for years! Just having trouble finding a replacement filter.

    Questions

    1 - 7 of 7 Questions

Q: What is inside the filter cartridge? What kind of filter medium is it? Is it carbon activated? Can I have the filter cartridge specs?

    2 Answers
    • A: Hi CAMPKING, Thanks for your answer it was helpful. You mentioned the filter media is manufactured in the USA, however, the packaging notes made in China. Does this refer to the casing of the cartridge only?

Q: What is the micron rating on this filter?

    1 Answer
    • A: The media in this filter will reduce contaminants larger than 0.2 micron plus soluble contaminants because it contains activated carbon. This filter is a non-woven media which reduces contaminants thru both mechanical and electro-adsorptive means. This makes it very effective on reducing both soluble and particulate contaminants. The filter has been independently tested and verified to reduce these contaminants: 99.9999% bacteria 99.9% virus 99.9% cyst

Q: A previous answer submitted for this product said that this filter is not designed to be backwashed, however the included instructions say to backwash the filter regularly. Which of these is correct?

    1 Answer
    • A: I purchased this filter from Canadian tire and the instructions say to backwash. I've used this filter 3 times now, backwashing after use and I'm lucky to filter 1 liter over night now. In my opinion this filter is garbage. I would go to MEC and purchase one that you can take apart and clean.

Q: Does this filter require/benefit from backwashing?

    1 Answer
    • A: Hi Kevin, this filter is not a typical HFM filter - those types of filters do not remove virus. Our filter is designed to remove virus, which means it is not designed to be backwashed. Once the filter flow rate reaches an unacceptable rate, likely around 200 gallons, then is to be discarded and replaced with a new filter.

Q: What is the filtration capacity/limit of the included filter?

    1 Answer
    • A: Hi Kevin, The filter is capable of filtering 100 gallons of water/unit at the maximum rate After 100 gallons of use, the flow rate drops to approximately 50% of the flow rate at the first gallon filtered. The filter can still be used to filter more water, but the flow rate will be slower.
