Good for heavy lifting, stands up to daily abuse

I am a landscaper in Southern Ontario. I purchased this knife for an EDC type pocket tool to use at work in the outdoor trades, ranging from forestry to gardening and greenhouse work. For all intents and purposes I have no complaints. Victorinox products are always a solid choice for all sorts of gigs, and this is no exception. I put my Dial Pro X through daily abuse in all sorts of conditions. I have used it for everything from taking plant cuttings in the greenhouse to hacking at muddy tree roots and branches in the bush. The serrated blade is incredibly sharp (shaving sharp out of the box) and very easy to touch up with a Smith's Pocket Pal tapered diamond rod. The main blade is a great size for small to medium sized work, and in both cases the classic Vic blade steel is soft enough that if you happen to slip and hit a rock you can sharpen the nick out with minimal effort. Soft steel does require more frequent sharpening, but also affords you the ability to pull the edge back into shape on a variety of things (stone, diamond, ceramic) fairly easily. Also worth noting, all three liner locks move in the opposite way to most standard folding knives, suggesting this is a 'left handed knife'. This is the case with all 111mm Victorinox knives and simply requires a different closing technique than what many of us are used to. The other tools perform their jobs perfectly well. The large flat head driver is awesome, especially for light prying and if filed down slightly to remove the rounded edge at the tip it can scrape and score pretty good too. I have been using this tool for all sorts of jobs for a year now and haven't noticed it loosen up or twist at all; in reality I probably reach for the large driver almost as often as I grab the main blade. The handle material, with the dual density rubber inserts, stays grippy in wet and dry conditions, as well as when matched with various glove materials (I've used deerskin, suede, artificial leather as found on Mechanix gloves, and nitrile with it and found no problems). A bonus with the rubber inserts, when you opt for front pocket carry it helps the knife sit upright in the pocket, which is more comfortable than a knife that constantly lays down on its side across your thigh. Here are three distinct issues that some may take issue with. The backside tools can flex backwards onto your fingers if you apply too much force to them when holding in a fist grip with tool sticking through your fingers. This is a recurring issue with every swiss army knife I own, its a simple mechanical issue with the backsprings that Vic has yet to resolve after many years! Another recurring thing you might find with all the 111mm liner lock Vic blades is a slight amount of up and down play in the main blade in deployed position. I have never noticed an issue with this in actual use; just be aware when you purchase that this is present in the entire knife lineup and not a defect with your specific piece. FInally and probably most notably, I would not recommend this knife as an option for situations where you intend to use the main fine edge blade for long periods, such as bushcrafting or whittling. This is because when you are holding the knife with main blade deployed in a hammer or sabre-type grip, the deployment hole of the closed serrated blade will dig into your ring finger and cause a hot spot. Wearing heavier gloves makes this a non-issue, but just something to be aware of. If you are looking for a 111mm Victorinox knife to use for woodcrafting or whittling I would recommend something like the Soldier or One Hand Trekker model, which have only one deployment hole; the ergonomics are better. That being said, having the curved serrated blade allows for much heavier cutting of rope, strap, tree roots, and other things where raw cutting power are required. For me, the handle hot spot is a non-issue because I am not out there carving tent pegs and feather sticks with this knife for hours at a time. Save that work for a more task-appropriate tool. Overall, I love the heft and cutting power of this pocket tool, as well as the utility of other tool options. By way of comparison, I choose to carry this over my Leatherman Wave regularly, provided I keep a capable pair of pliers handy.

    Yes, I recommend this product.

    Questions

    1 - 1 of 1 Question

Q: Seat Belt Cutter? One-hand serrated locking seat belt cutter - just out of curiosity, is the blade just used for cutting seat belts or are there other uses for this cutter?

    1 Answer
    • A: the curve and partial serration of the blade is ideal for cutting ALL rugged twine/fabric materials. This will quickly become your favourite rope cutting tool.
