The primer provided good coverage on the trailer axle, the axle was heavily pitted with rust. 2 coats of primer were required.

Q: Can this primer be put on with a sprayer?

A: Tremclad Red Oxide primer can be thinned with mineral spirits and sprayed. However, we don't recommend this application method as the addition of mineral spirits puts Tremclad over it's maximum VOC limit. It is best to recommend this primer be brushed or rolled on.

A: Hi, Great question! Our Tremclad Rust Primer will require the Tremclad Rust topcoat paint as the primer was not designed as the final coat. Our Tremclad Rust Paint will offer very good chemical resistance.

Q: Can you paint over this with alkyd paint?

A: Hi Barb, Our Tremclad Rust Paint is an oil modified alkyd. If you would like to use another alkyd paint overtop, it's best to test on a small area first.

Q: Can this product be used on mostly bare aluminum? There is a bit of paint in some spots?

A: Hi Kelly, Great question! Yes, our Tremclad Oil-Based Rust Paint Primer will adhere to bare aluminum. We recommend a very good clean and a light scuff sand with 220-grit. You could also try our Tremclad in water-based, which has excellent adhesion to aluminum surfaces.

Q: I have already sanded off most rust on a metal lintel/lintol, but with some rust left here and there that is very hard to get rid of. Can I use this product on it, or what is the best product to use in my case?

A: Yes, Tremclad primers can be applied to rusted surfaces, provided any loose or flaking rust has been removed.
