Q: Is the outter surface soft gel, or is it a hard surface?

A: The interior side has a soft gel sewn inside the black cloth but I didn't find it any softer than foam; the exterior has a hard clear plastic very well glued to the fabric (By the way, on gel bike seats, gel eventually deteriorates esp when wet, so these may too)

Q: can these be used for roller skating/biking ? children ones are way too small for my daughter... will these do?

A: Hello, these kneepads are not recommended to be used as personal protective equipment for roller skating or biking for impact. They are meant to be used to protect the knees while kneeling over rough terrain surfaces. Thank you, Derek
