Q: Recoil strength? As an alternative to a much more expensive pet-specific yard tie-up retractor, would the recoil on this product be too strong for a dog to be comfortable standing against?

A: no problem as a pet lead if used with a travelling pulley on a clothesline. retractor was not strong enough to hurt my cairn terrier and kept line from being too loose and in the way.

A: You just pull the line down and draw the slack down, adding a twist, and loop it around the little handle at the base of the casing. Works beautifully!
