Solvable Professional Grade Boiled Linseed Oil is excellent for protecting concrete walks and floors, flagstone or interlocking stone from the elements and from salt and chemical damage. It also protects log cabins and wood panelling. You can use it as an oil finish for most wood types because it creates a coating that is impervious to water, heat, most stains, and scratches. Staining with this product achieves a warm golden tone to pine and maple. Porous woods and walnut will darken considerably when treated.

Used this product to bring life to some old wine barrels we had. It did a great job and did not have an overwhelming scent, and actually dried to the touch quite quickly while maintaining that moist look.

Boiled Oil that's worth the Toil

My family has been using linseed oil to weatherproof the wood of our sheds ever since I was a kid. I finished the "oldest shed" yesterday; over 60 years old and still no rot anywhere. Linseed makes the wood appear darker; however, it does a great job at protecting it.

Q: Can this product be applied to the bottom 4' of untreated white cedar fence posts to achieve a longer post life before rot? Safe for the ground environment?

A: Yes, it can be used in the proposed application. Linseed oil is readily biodegradable, floats on water and absorbs to soil, so risk to environment is low

A: No. Boiled linseed oil is not generally considered food safe due to drying agents. It is best to use a wood with natural rot resistance such as cedar. Do not use pressure-treated lumber.

A: My inclination is not to use an oil or sealant at all, as it prevents the wood from breathing. Cedar contains natural preservatives which protect it. Linseed oil can stay sticky for a long time, particularly if it is applied in a thick coat or used in a humid environment.

A: Boiled linseed oil is toxic in the liquid state. It is not recommended to use for cutting boards or counter tops.

Q: I know they heat linseed to make polymerized linseed oil. Is this considered a polymerized linseed oil?
